Founder, Tom's of Maine and Founder & President of Rambler's Way Farm
Tom Chappell is an entrepreneur, environmentalist, philanthropist, author, and family man. After he and his wife, Kate, settled in Maine to live a lifestyle closely connected to nature, Tom and Kate, an artist, founded Tom’s of Maine in 1970 which became a pioneer and leader in the natural personal care business. Their legacy of a belief that a business can be environmentally sensitive, socially responsible, and profitable lives on with Tom’s of Maine under its new owners, Colgate-Palmolive, Inc. Since the sale in 2006, Colgate has continued to support the practice of these values while expanding operations in Maine with Tom’s of Maine’s management.
Tom has had a life-long interest in the responsibility of the corporation to society and has written two books on business ethics. The Soul of a Business, 1993, sets a standard for the moral corporation which is defined as a responsible agent in relation to its employees, customers, owners, environment, suppliers, and communities. Managing Upside Down, 1999, defines a set of tools for leaders to manage with both head and heart together, called The Seven Intentions of Values-Centered Leadership, so as to enhance both corporate culture and business performance.
